Buspools
This type of bus service requires about 30-40 people at one or more adjacent work sites to form a buspool which leaves from selected park and ride lots. The employer provides a parking area for the bus, and volunteer drivers are trained or a driver can be provided by the bus leasing company. VDOT will provide a subsidy for a limited time to assist the buspool start-up while passengers are recruited to pay the cost of operating the bus. The program is for buspools that originate south of the Springfield Interchange.
Buspools are a great way to gain access to the HOV lanes for a faster, stress-free ride. They are ideal for serving commuters at workplaces not served by existing public transportation providers. Buspools also qualify for the tax-free transit benefit program, Metrochek, if offered by your employer.
Free assistance in linking you with bus operators to set up a buspool and working with your work site on recruiting passengers is available through your local rideshare agency or by calling RADCO Rideshare at (540) 373-2890. This new assistance will begin later this year.
