Because traffic patterns constantly change in a work zone, it's crucial that you pay close attention to detour signs. The interchange is much safer for motorists now that it's complete.

  • In 2006, there were 17 work zone fatalities and 1,098 injuries in Virginia.
  • Merge as soon as possible. Motorists can help maintain traffic flow and posted speeds by moving to the appropriate lanes as soon as the first merge sign is visible.
  • Areas where traffic is entering or leaving work zones are most dangerous because that's where drivers are jockeying for position.
  • The most common crash in a highway work zone is the rear-end collision. Crashes in non-construction areas are more commonly angle or side-swiping crashes.
