General Lane Closure Guidelines

NOTE: While the contractor is permitted to work 24 hours a day, seven days a week throughout the project, the following information is provided as general guidelines VDOT will follow during the construction of the Springfield Interchange Improvement Project. During emergency situations or special construction circumstances, the general guidelines are subject to change.

Week Days

Monday-Thursday: No lane closures from 5:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
Friday: No lane closures from 5:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and noon to midnight.

Weekends and Holidays

Lane closures or work that restricts traffic flow is not permitted on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays from noon the day before the holiday until noon the day after a holiday. When a holiday falls on a Friday, lane closures are not permitted from noon Thursday to noon Monday. Holidays are, New Year's Day, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, President's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veteran's Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day.

NOTE: Motorists are asked to understand that throughout 2006 until the end of the project in 2007, there will be an increased amount of night lane closures/detours on Saturday and Sunday nights to allow for the completion of several bridges in the I-95/395/495 area.

I-95/395/495 and Associated Ramps

  • Single lane closures are permitted:
    9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday-Thursday
    9:30 p.m. to 5:00 a.m., Monday-Thursday
    9:00 a.m. to Noon, Friday
  • Multiple lane closures are permitted:
    10:30 p.m. to 5:00 a.m., Monday-Thursday
  • HOV lane closures:
    Complete roadway closures are permitted between 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and midnight to 4:00 a.m.
  • Complete road closures:
    Complete roadway closures to facilitate lifting and placing bridge beams, demolition, removal of bridge elements, installation or removal of overhead signs and structures over 1-95/395/495 and HOV lanes are permitted between 9:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. Monday-Friday morning. When a full road/ramp closure is planned motorists will be given notice 96 hours in advance. Should the work be postponed due to weather or an unforeseen event, the work will occur on the following night.
