Before & After
VDOT's goal is to give you a safer and easier drive. The renderings below suggest there will soon be an even bigger "Mixing Bowl," but in reality it will be simpler to navigate.
Below you'll find some renderings that depict how different areas of the interchange will appear when construction is complete.
Under Construction - Expected Completion Late 2007

The new and improved interchange will allow for future growth. Traffic volumes will increase to 500,000 vehicles per day by 2020. The new interchange will allow that traffic to move safer and smoother. Through-traffic will be separated from local traffic. Signs will direct motorists to the appropriate lanes before they reach the interchange. Phase 4 began in 2000 and was completed in 2004. It includes:
- 4,800-foot bridge for traffic heading west on I-495 to I-95 south.
- Widening of the Capital Beltway from I-395 east to Van Dorn Street
- Clearing of land in the northwest and southwest corners of the interchange for new lanes
- Shifting a portion of the Beltway's outer loop where it crosses I-95.
